Tool: Protovis

This entry is under construction.

Protovis is a free, open-source (BSD license) JavaScript library that the authors claim composes custom views of data with simple marks such as bars and dots. They say that unlike low-level graphics libraries that quickly become tedious for visualization, Protovis defines marks through dynamic properties that encode data, allowing inheritance, scales and layouts to simplify construction. They further claim that programming experience is not a necessity, because Protovis is most declarative, and designed to be learned by example.

Unfortunately, as of 6/28/2011, the Protovis project is no longer under active development, as the team has transitioned to d3.js.
