Effective use of hierarchy. Color more than just distinguishing parts: companies. Eg htc makes android and wp7 devices, has same color. Colors seem isoluminant, avoiding visual ordering of nominal data, but creating trouble for color blind folk.

Homework: viz, data and tool examples
We will start quickly by asking each of you to find three online examples: one visualization example, one data example, and one tool example. You can find more information about what to look for and how to turn these in on our class website. You must turn in one example during each of the first three weeks, in any order: that is visualization, tool, data or data, visualization, tool etc. Due dates are end of day on

Color does little here beside make slices distinct, and not very effectively (see color blindness). It'd be fun to see the long tail they discuss more literally, so we could see the rate of falloff.
