Visual meaning readings: multimedia learning & marketing

Please make your reactions to these papers comments on this post.

Multimedia learning, and more of the marketing perspective:

Richard Mayer. (2003). The promise of multimedia learning: using the same instructional design methods across different media. Learning and Instruction, 13, 2, 125-139..

Linda Scott and Patrick Vargas. (2007). Writing with pictures: toward a unifying theory of consumer response to images. Journal of Consumer Research, 34, 3, 341-356.

Best,

Ben.

Visual meaning readings: semiotics

Please make your reactions to these readings comments on this post.

Much of semiotics is extremely theoretical and philosophical, but these are fairly accessible, using applied perspectives in geographic and advertising:

Jacques Bertin. (2001). Matrix theory of graphics. Information Design Journal, 10, 1, 5-19. This is a short but dense summary of Bertin's work. There's a related summary of Bertin's ideas in the article by Daru right after Bertin's.

David Glen Mick. (1986). Consumer research and semiotics: exploring the morphology of signs, symbols, and significance. Journal of Consumer Research: An Interdisciplinary Quarterly, 13, 2, 196-213.

Best,

Ben.

Visual meaning readings: cognitive science

Hi folks,

Here's the second set of readings, focusing on the perspective from cognitive scientists:

Best, Ben.

Visual meaning readings: statistical graphics

Hi folks,

Here's the set of readings for tomorrow -- last minute I admit. Make sure you read the short first paper, and if you have time, look at the second -- we'll discuss it Thursday if necessary. As I said earlier, reactions are not due until Thursday (while Thursday's reactions are due Wednesday).
  • William Cleveland, Robert McGill. (1985). Graphical perception and graphical methods for analyzing scientific data. Science, 229, 4716, 828-833. Full text available through our library.
  • William Cleveland, Robert McGill. (1987). Graphical Perception: The Visual Decoding of Quantitative Information on Graphical Displays of Data. Journal of the Royal Statistical Society. Series A (General), 150, 3, 192-229. Full text available through our library.
For those who are intrigued and want more, Cleveland has also published a couple of interesting books in the early 90s. Another early paper on visualizing internet data also caught my interest:
  • William Cleveland, Don Sun. (2000). Internet traffic data. Journal of the American Statistical Society, 95, 451, 979-985. Full text available through our library.
Best,

Ben.
