Reaction: Effectively communicating numbers

The article shows number of ways which can be used to effectively represent numerical data to right type of visualization. It also suggests some of the best practices that can be followed to improve formatting of these visualizations. In the end author comes up with steps and guidelines for designing a graph.

The flow of article is very clear, as the author first comes up with an introductory real world example and then discusses the general concepts and practices about graph designing before coming up with the best practices and the steps for graph selection and the design process. Hence, I found this paper to be very good for anyone who want to learn basic concepts of graph designing process with their appropriate uses.

However, it is not clear to me that if these are some sort of standards to design a graph given a quantitative data. Can there be any more ways to come up with even more better graph designs (because the author writes "The Best means to encode quantitative data in graphs") ?

I was also wondering what set of rules and guidelines did Florence Nightingale apply to discover the piechart type graph which was shown in the class ?
