Reaction: A survey of Algorithms for Volume Visualization

This paper has given quite an impressive introduction and justification to the study of volume visualization. As the title suggests, this being a survey paper, gives a comprehensive overview of the techniques and approaches to volume visualization.

The discussion of mapping scientific visualization with volume visualization renders the readers to understand the various challenges and applications. Visualization is used mainly for extracting meaningful information and representing them in the most cognitive manner. The authors state that volume visualization is the most active subfield of scientific visualization. But however this subfield still needs further development in terms of data representations, data manipulation and rendering. Furthermore there are many challenges unsolved in the field of volume visualization in terms of dataset, imaging, etc. There is also an extensive discussion regarding the data characteristics and volume characteristics for volume visualization. The data characteristics are concerned with issues like sources for data and alternative for standardizing the data sources.

Another commendable approach used in this paper is the discussion of the approaches used in every method for visualization instead of enlisting the algorithm itself. It gives the reader quite a comprehensive view of the various attributes that are considered for an algorithm. This gives an interesting view to the paper. And towards the conclusion of the paper, the authors have even cited about the ethical issues that should be considered while considering the volume visualization techniques. Since most of the discussions for the volume visualization have been based upon the results from the medical industry, the importance of the accuracy of the visualization has been stressed for ethical reasons.

Thus this paper has been well illustrated and gives quite an interesting discussion about the techniques for the various algorithms for volume visualization.
