Reaction: Balancing Systematic and Flexible Exploration of Social Networks

The representation of  advantages and disadvantages of networks and their visualization is a very difficult task. Hear the author takes help of Social Action to drive the paper. Challenges in visualizing networks are considered thoroughly here. They also mention about  new projects on improving interactive exploration with networks like GUess, TreePlus,NetLens and most importantly Temporal evolution. Ranking Social Networks. gave a new aspect to the visualization of networks.

I felt the color combination used in the paper was not very intuitive. A gradient of color is used which is not very easy to understand. The filtering by ranking was a good idea. The scatter plot method even though cluttered gave more idea about the data and where it should be positioned. The paper has discussed about the challenges of representing data when the network is very larger. It says it can be improved by  aggregate rankings of cohesive subgrouping and multiplex rankings.

I agree to the point where the author says network analysis is a serious research topic and considering a longitudinal study is the most effective way to reach on a better solution.
