Reaction: Distributed Cognition as a Theoretical Framework for Information Visualization

Cognition involves how a human brain perceives something and how it is registered. InfoViz is all about how effectively a visualization of a dataset is perceived or understood by a person. So the use of human cognition principles in building a base for a framework for InfoViz is very natural. I found the distributed cognition theory to be applied for building a theoretical framework for InfoViz a bit confusing and difficult to uderstand at first. But from what I grasp from the paper, there are two types - internal and external representation of a given cognitive task. And unlike traditional cognition, DCog aims to take into account both without marginalizing any one. I feel the strength of DCog must lie in this approach.
