Reaction: Distributed Cognition as a Theoretical Framework for Information Visualization

The article argues that information visualization is based on DCog as an underlying framework. In information visualization, representation and interaction are of greater importance so as to comprehend the data.

The paper recognizes that environment is one of the indispensible factors for thinking. The article claims that DCog has greater explanatory power to understand role of environment and cognition especially in the field of information visualization. It also claims that DCog address the central issues of visualization and provides concepts to address complex cognitive tasks.

It is discussed that in theoretical congition, details of environment are stored as a part of human cog, on the other hand, in DCog, reductionist approach is used in which the details of environment are not considered.

DCog emphasizes on external representation of human mind and varies from traditional cognition. This paper is not about comparing these two approaches to cognition but is about setting up a framework for the future.

The article, finally, tries to move this discussion to a social level.
I believe that the article has introduced DCog quite well alongwith its concepts and few scenrios.
