Reaction: A Review of Overview+Detail, Zooming, and Focus+Context Interfaces

This article gave a summary of the state of research on information visualization by dividing the study into three task-based categories: Overview+Detail, Zooming, and Focus+Context. I think there was a lot of information in this article and the authors tried to be as broad in their assessment as they could. Because there was so much information, I actually found myself wishing this article itself had a visualization that I could browse through to discover the points that I thought interesting.

I think the three categories they picked to divide the current research were a good start, but they seemed to be fairly complex and there was quite a bit of overlap between the three. That made it difficult to really figure out why something was placed in one category and not the other. There was also a fourth category that could be used with all the other three. The inclusion of this category added another level of confusion to the article.

Overall, because of the breadth of the information that they discuss, I can see this article being very useful. I would use it while developing an interaction to refer to and get a sense for what the research says is good and bad about a given strategy.
