The author starts with the concept of exploring the data or items from a huge collection. Yes this is the need of the day. As time progresses, we are moving towards Peta bytes and zeta bytes of data and warehousing and filtering are some hot topics in connection to the Business Intelligence and analytics. The authors have emphasized the manta for visual information seeking.. and which is that you overview first, next you zoom and filter and then provide details on demand.
The authors in this paper define different types of data ; 7 in all based on different categories. Each data type is described really well and it is followed by an example which I feel is very good to avoid any ambiguity for the reader of this paper. By this taxonomy of data types the authors want to state that most of the real world data can be represented by this with which I agree.
Next they have defined seven types of tasks that can be performed on these data types. I have explored some of the web viz in this semester and now I am able to relate these tasks to the data types or the tasks in general. Also reading this paper will help me in building my own viz in which the exploration of data will be easy for users if built in a proper way.
