Radioactive Orchestra: Creating Music from Radioactive Isotope Decay
The Radioactive Orchestra [kth.se] by Axel Boman creates intriguing melodies by simulating how an isotope decays from its excited nuclear state to its ground state. Users can select up to 5 different isotopes from a collection of 3,175 that are currently known to man.
A music note is emitted each time the isotope looses energy by way of releasing a gamma photon. This way, a distinct audio impression is created directly from the radiation characteristic that originates from the atomic nucleus.
Next to generating some beautiful sounds from natural phenomena, the goal of this online sonification application is to make natural science, and nuclear physics more particularly, more playful and engaging.
